Am I Doing The Right Thing?

By Money F Posted in: Money

I was planning on moving my pony to a new barn in a few weeks but i’m thinking of selling her instead, i am growing too big for her and she’s getting really old. I want to talk to my parents today about it but i know i’m going to burst into tears while telling them. Nobody will want my pony as shes older, but very energetic! The instructor at my barn now is who i bought my pony from. The contract i signed said i have to give her first option to buy if i want to sell. Iv’e already sold my previous horse becuase she was too strong and green for me and i felt so guilty after becuase my parents put all their money into her and i just couldn’t handle her. And now my pony i have now, iv’e outgrown her in skill, height and age. I’m afraid my trainer will be mad at me for wanting to sell her but i just want the best for my pony and i don’t believe that the best just isn’t with me anymore. What should i do? Am i doing he right thing? :(

    Sell her.
There is another girl out there waiting for your pony to teacher her all the stuff she taught you.
To tell your parents, write it all out and give it to them to read. This way you can take your time and make sure you get everything down. It also means you do not have to worry about bursting into tears.
Your parents are well aware that you would outgrow your pony and so was your instructor. That is why she wanted first buy back.
I sold my very gentle 27 year old horse to a 4 year old girl who wanted a horse not a pony. It broke my heart since I had had her since she was a foal, but it was a perfect match. I was too heavy for my mare but the little girl was not.
Selling your pony is best for you and for the pony especially since she can go back to her previous owner.

If the pony is honestly much too small and old and basic then there is no point in still keeping her, explain this to your parents and I’m sure that they will sympathise with you, you already have a guaranteed buyer (your instructor) so if you can sell the pony for a nice fee then you can invest in another horse who is better suited to your progressing abilities

    Yes.
Soon you will be far too big for your pony, at the point where you cannot ride. Your parents want you to be happy and if you and your horse are not happy, then what’s the point. Don’t worry, if your pony will be safe, you have nothing to be sorry for.

Sell her. Your parents will take another loss but your trainer will probably buy her back.

Yes, I think you are doing the right thing by selling her :)

I see no problem with selling your pony under the circumstances as long as you ensure it goes to a good home. I’ve been riding my whole life and have bought and sold many horses to compete with over the years. Selling them was never easy but I made sure they would be taken care of when it just wasn’t practical for me to keep that particular horse for various reasons any more eg. outgrown, not advanced enough to ever compete at my level etc. I know you said the pony was getting older, is it bombproof? If so you may be able to sell it as a kids first beginner horse. Hope this helps, good luck.
