BUT! You don’t need a teaching certificate to teach in a college. You need a master’s degree (minimum) in the subject you’re teaching. Further, colleges and universities don’t usually teach ESL, they require the TOEFL exam minimum scores before letting those students enroll. Some community colleges teach ESL in their continuing education or remedial ed programs, those might be an option. Many of those will require a CELTA certificate (or master’s degree in TESL/TEFL) but not a state teaching certificate.
A state teaching certificate is for people that want to teach children in public schools. People who teach for colleges, universities, business, non-profits, community based agencies, and the like aren’t required to have one.
A note about online teaching degrees: they aren’t completely “online” in the sense that you just take classes at home and never go to a school. All accredited teacher certification programs will require that you complete in classroom observations and student teaching experiences as part of the degree. Unless you happen to have a real classroom full of students in your house.
