How Can I Cash A Check For Free Or For Not Much Money?

By Money F Posted in: Money

OK, here’s the deal: I have two credit unions that are great for just about everything except having branches where I live. This has been a thorn in my side because I will receive many personal checks and soon will be receiving a few very large checks that I would like to deposit in credit union #2. This credit union is still in the stone age and doesn’t allow for remote depositing. The first credit union has my name and my wife’s name on it and therefore I don’t want to deposit the money there because she will spend it all on ridiculous things. I really just want a good way to access my money without having to pay for it, but I’m really frustrated about the policies of the local banks here. They want you to shove $5000 into their accounts and then earn **** for interest like they’re doing you a favor and they still give me a hard time when I cash checks over $500. Why can’t the awesome credit unions just have local branches!?!?!

Why don’t they have branches? Because they are credit unions and not banks… they were chartered to serve a certain area.
They probably have deposit by mail… call them and ask. Then put your check in an envelope after you have endorsed it “for deposit only” and photo copied it.

If you’ve moved away from where you used to bank, it seems like the logical thing to do would be to find a new bank or credit union where you live now.

If possible try cashing the check at the bank it is drawn from. Some charge as little as $5… my fiance cashed a $2500 check at the bank it was drawn on and I think it only cost him $20.
